Understanding Disney Cruise Line’s cancellation policy is important before you book a cruise or decide to cancel an existing reservation. The amount you may receive back depends largely on the type of stateroom, length of the cruise, how far in advance you cancel, and whether your reservation has special restrictions.
Disney Cruise Line does not use one cancellation fee for every cruise. Standard reservations generally become subject to higher cancellation fees as the sailing date gets closer. Some restricted-rate reservations are nonrefundable from the time of payment, while suites and Concierge staterooms have different cancellation schedules.
This guide explains the main rules in simple terms so you can understand what may happen to your money if you need to cancel a Disney cruise.
Disney Cruise Line allows guests to cancel a cruise before the vacation begins, but cancellation fees can apply depending on the reservation and the number of days remaining before departure.
For standard, non-restricted reservations, the cancellation fee generally increases as the sailing date approaches. The official U.S. terms currently divide the schedule according to:
The applicable cancellation fee is deducted from the amount paid, with any remaining eligible amount refunded according to Disney Cruise Line's terms.
For standard Inside, Oceanview, and Verandah categories without restrictions, Disney Cruise Line uses different schedules depending on the length of the cruise.
For cruises of 1 to 5 nights, excluding Suites and Concierge staterooms, the current U.S. cancellation schedule is:
Time Before SailingCancellation Fee
90 days or moreNo fee
89–45 daysDeposit per guest
44–30 days50% of vacation price per guest
29–15 days75% of vacation price per guest
14 days or less100% of vacation price per guest
These are the cancellation fees listed in Disney Cruise Line's current U.S. terms and conditions.
For cruises lasting 6 nights or longer, excluding Suites and Concierge staterooms, the current schedule is:
Time Before SailingCancellation Fee
120 days or moreNo fee
119–56 daysDeposit per guest
55–30 days50% of vacation price per guest
29–15 days75% of vacation price per guest
14 days or less100% of vacation price per guest
The longer cancellation-free period for longer cruises is an important difference to consider when planning your trip.
Suites and Concierge staterooms have stricter cancellation schedules than standard categories.
The current U.S. terms list:
For longer cruises, the current schedule is:
Because these rules can result in cancellation charges much earlier than standard stateroom rules, guests booking a Suite or Concierge category should review the applicable terms before paying.
This is one of the most important exceptions.
Disney Cruise Line's U.S. terms state that reservations for Inside, Outside, or Verandah categories with restrictions are nonrefundable and nontransferable, with a 100% cruise cancellation fee applying from the time of payment.
That means you should not assume that every reservation has a period during which you can cancel and receive your deposit back.
Before choosing a discounted or restricted fare, carefully check the conditions attached to that specific rate.
Making the final payment does not automatically mean that you lose the entire amount if you later cancel. The applicable cancellation fee depends on your reservation's category and how close you are to the sailing date.
However, once you reach a period with a large cancellation penalty, a substantial portion—or potentially all—of the cruise price may become nonrefundable.
Disney Cruise Line also notes that certain modifications made after final payment may require the reservation to be cancelled and rebooked, which can trigger cancellation fees.
For this reason, it is better to check the financial consequences before changing or cancelling a paid reservation.
Disney Cruise Line says that most modifications and cancellations can be completed online.
The general process is:
Disney states that the Modify Reservation area can be used for actions such as changing the sail date, editing the travel party, modifying the stateroom, or cancelling the reservation.
If the reservation does not appear in your account, Disney provides an Add Reservation option for linking it to your profile.
If you booked through a travel agency or travel advisor, Disney Cruise Line instructs guests to contact their travel advisor for modifications and cancellations.
Your advisor can explain the cancellation consequences for your particular reservation and help process the cancellation.
When a cancellation qualifies for a refund, Disney Cruise Line's U.S. terms state that amounts paid, minus applicable cancellation fees and other amounts owed, will be refunded.
For reservations made directly with Disney Cruise Line, refunds are generally processed back to the original credit card account. When a travel advisor made the reservation, the refund is processed through the Travel Agent. Disney also states that some travel agencies may charge their own cancellation fee.
This means the amount returned to you may not simply equal your original payment.
Sometimes, but not in every situation.
A full refund may be possible when you cancel during a period where no cancellation fee applies. For example, under the current U.S. standard-stateroom schedule, eligible 1- to 5-night cruises cancelled 90 days or more before the vacation commencement date have no cruise cancellation fee. For eligible cruises of 6 nights or more, the no-fee period is 120 days or more.
However, restricted reservations can be nonrefundable from the time of payment, and Suites and Concierge bookings follow different schedules.
Therefore, the answer depends on your exact reservation rather than simply the date you booked.
Disney Cruise Line offers an optional Vacation Protection Plan that combines travel insurance benefits with a separate Cancel For Any Reason cruise-credit feature.
The insurance portion can provide trip-cancellation and interruption benefits for certain covered reasons, subject to the plan's terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions.
The separate Cancel For Any Reason feature can provide a future cruise credit of up to 75% of the cancellation fee imposed by Disney Cruise Line. Disney states that these credits are valid for one year from the issue date, are nontransferable, and have no cash value.
This is different from receiving a cash refund.
Disney states that the Vacation Protection Plan must be paid by the earlier of the final payment date or the date certain reservation charges become nonrefundable.
If you are considering travel protection, read the plan documents before purchasing it. Insurance coverage applies only to qualifying circumstances and is subject to exclusions and limits.
Disney's cancellation policy also covers situations where Disney Cruise Line, rather than the guest, cancels a cruise.
For cruises boarding passengers at a U.S. port, Disney's current terms state that if Disney cancels the cruise or delays it for more than three calendar days, and the guest does not accept an alternative cruise or choose to travel on the delayed cruise, the guest may request a refund or cruise credit. Specific documentation and a request deadline apply.
This is different from voluntarily cancelling your reservation.
Changing your trip may sometimes be preferable to cancelling it, but Disney warns that some changes can have cancellation consequences.
For example, Disney states that a change to the vacation commencement date or a guest-name change can be treated as a cancellation under its U.S. terms.
Disney also states that availability and pricing are not guaranteed if a cancelled reservation is reinstated. If you cancel and later decide to restore the reservation, it may be priced using the prevailing rate and available category at that time. Special promotional pricing may also not be reinstated.
Before cancelling, compare the cost of changing the reservation with the cancellation penalty.
A cruise vacation may include additional travel arrangements, such as flights or hotel stays.
These components can have separate cancellation rules.
Disney's terms state that cancelling the cruise can also cancel associated air travel, with applicable airline and Disney Cruise Line fees potentially applying. Airline restrictions and ticket conditions can also affect the final amount refunded.
Hotel reservations can likewise have their own cancellation terms.
For that reason, do not calculate your potential refund using only the cruise fare. Check the conditions for every component of your vacation package.
Before you submit a cancellation request, take a few minutes to review the reservation.
Determine whether you booked:
The category can change the cancellation deadline and fee.
Do not rely only on the date you made the reservation. Disney's cancellation schedules are based on how many days remain before the vacation commencement date.
If you purchased Disney's Vacation Protection Plan or another travel insurance policy, review its terms before cancelling.
If your booking includes airfare, hotels, transfers, or other arrangements, ask about cancellation consequences for each component.
After cancelling, keep the confirmation and any refund information. This can help if you need to track the refund or verify the cancellation later.
No. The cancellation fee depends on factors such as cruise length, stateroom category, restricted-rate conditions, and the number of days remaining before sailing.
For eligible reservations, cancellation before final payment may result in a lower fee or no fee, depending on the reservation and timing. However, some restricted reservations are nonrefundable from the time of payment.
It depends on your reservation. Under the standard U.S. cancellation schedule, eligible standard staterooms can have a no-fee cancellation period, while restricted categories can be nonrefundable from the time of payment.
For the standard U.S. categories covered by the published schedule, a cancellation made 14 days or less before the vacation commencement date carries a 100% cancellation fee. The same 100% fee appears in the Suite and Concierge schedules.
Yes. Disney Cruise Line says most modifications and cancellations can be made online through My Reservations and the Modify Reservation option. Travel-advisor bookings should be handled through the travel advisor.
No. Travel insurance only covers qualifying circumstances according to the policy terms. Disney's Vacation Protection Plan also has a separate Cancel For Any Reason cruise-credit feature with specific conditions; it is not the same as a cash refund.
Depending on the circumstances, Disney's terms may provide a refund or cruise credit when Disney cancels the cruise or a qualifying delay occurs and you do not accept an alternative sailing. Specific conditions and deadlines apply.
Not necessarily. Disney states that original availability and pricing are not guaranteed if a cancelled reservation is reinstated, and promotional offers may not be available again.
Disney Cruise Line's cancellation policy is based on the details of your individual reservation. Standard staterooms generally have cancellation fees that increase as the sailing date approaches, while Suites, Concierge bookings, and restricted fares have different and often stricter rules.
The most important steps are to identify your stateroom category, determine the length of your cruise, calculate how many days remain before sailing, and check whether your reservation includes travel protection or other vacation components.
If you are ready to cancel, Disney Cruise Line allows most eligible reservations to be cancelled online through My Reservations. If a travel advisor made the booking, contact the advisor instead. Most importantly, review the applicable terms before cancelling because once a reservation is cancelled, its original price and availability may not be available if you later decide to rebook.
